After the Friday morning session of the 2017 State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena was over, four Class 1A wrestlers earned their way onto the medal stand Saturday night. What’s to be determined is how high the placings will be.

A trio of Panorama Panthers and one from ACGC have guaranteed themselves no worse than an eighth place finish, as perhaps as high as finishing third. George Appleseth, Tyler Van Houton, and Gunnar Grunted are the three from Panorama, and this is reported to be the first time three Panthers have been place winners in the same year. Logan Scheuermann of ACGC becomes a State place winner for the second straight year after placing sixth a season ago.

Appleseth (132) was fresh heading into the second consolation round due to losing in the first round yesterday and winning in Thursday night’s first consolation round. Appleseth is a three-time qualifier who will place in the top eight for the first time after winning 4-3 over Garrett Arment of Woodbury Central, and improving to 42-9. Van Houton lost by fall in the quarterfinals in 3:22 to Brennan Stafford of Mediapolis, but he bounced back with a consolation win by a 6-0 decision over Jacob Steinlage of Interstate-35. Van Houton (152) is now 51-4. Gunnar Grunted (170) lost by fall in 1:21 in the quarterfinals to Jarel Arbegast of West Fork (Sheffield) before winning a consolation match by fall in 5:30 over Norman Wilson of Maquoketa Valley.

Scheuermann also lost in the quarterfinals, dropping a 12-3 major decision to Trey Brisker of Wilton. He won his consolation match by first period fall in 1:34 over Skeeter Bostwick of Missouri Valley.

All four will wrestle sometime after 8 p.m. in the third consolation round. All the action can be heard on all three Raccoon Valley Radio stations, as well as www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
