Logan Scheuermann of ACGC at 145 lbs., Tyler Van Houten of Panorama at 152 lbs., and Gunnar Grunsted of Panorama (170) won first round matches at the Class 1A State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena of Des Moines halfway through the first round. Five of 10 area 1A wrestlers have finished their first round matches. Scheuermann, ranked seventh, improved to 42-5 with a 5-2 decision over Gordon Perry of Central Springs. He’ll next face number three Trey Brisker of Wilton in the Friday morning quarterfinals. Van Houten recorded a fall in 4:27 over Sebastian Berg of Akron-Westfield to improve to 51-3 on the season and the eighth ranked Panther meets number two Brennan Stafford of Mediapolis in the quarterfinals. Grunsted edged Kenneth Kriegel of HLV (Victor) in first round action to improve to 42-10. Grunted meets number three Jarel Abreast o f West Fork (Sheffield) Friday morning.
Losing first round matches and going into the consolation first round later this afternoon are Qwest Brown of West Central Valley (113), Austin Flynn of Ogden (126), George Appleseth of Panorama (132), Riley Algreen of WCV (182), Cade Suhr, ACGC (220), Dan Jensen, Panorama (285). Brown lost by fall in 2:36 to number one ranked Cael Happel of Lisbon. Flynn dropped a 6-4 decision to Cory Anderson of Wilton, and Appleseth lost a 10-0 major decision to Joshua TIbbits of Martensdale-St. Mary’s. Algren lost by fall in 2:47 to third rated Alec McDowell of Maquoketa Valley (Delhi). Suhr was pinned in 1:08 by top ranked Drake Johnsen, Logan-Magnolia, and Jensen lost by fall in :51 to Cameron Beminio of Belmond-Klemme.
A second loss today ends the tournament for the competitors. In the consolation first round, the area had one winner and six others on the short end. Qwest Brown lost 3-1 to Tyler Helgesson of Lake Mills to end his season 33-14.
Austin Flynn lost by fall in 5:13 in a back-and-forth match to Mark Dawson of Eagle Grove, and Flynn fishes the campaign with a 35-8 mark.
Riley Algreen met Juan Falcon of West Bend-Mallard on the consolation side and fell by technical fall 29-14 in one of the wilder matches of the day. Algren finishes 30-15.
Dalton Holmes faced Manning Kuboushek of South Winneshiek and lost by fall in 4:57. Holmes ended up 44-11.
Cade Suhr went against Erick Olivera of Sibley-Ocheyeden and lost 5-3 to finish the season 27-7.
Dan Jensen met Cody Crawford of WACO (Olds) and was pinned in :22. Jensen completes his junior year at 27-20.
George Appleseth advanced to tomorrow’s second consolation round with a 5-0 first consolation round win over Michael Eagan of MFL/Mar-Mac, 5-0. Appleseth takes a 42-9 record into a match vs. a quarterfinal round loser.
