Straight freezing rain in the overnight Monday has given away to regular rain mid-morning as some roads continue to improve in Greene County.

County Engineer Wade Weiss says the county paved roads are slushy but are still slick. The gravel roads are still completely covered with ice. He has the maintainers running their gravel routes, trying to scrap the road ahead of the trucks that apply sand and salt for traction. Weiss doesn’t recommend travel on the gravel roads at this time. He adds that the low traffic numbers have helped considerably with treating the roads with their equipment.

Jefferson Public Works Director Dave Morlan tells Raccoon Valley Radio they’ve applied sand and salt to all the major roads in town, but the side streets are still very slick. He would like to ask vehicles to be off the streets, especially on the side roads, so they can apply their materials. He adds that it’s tough for their trucks to go around parked vehicles, because once the trucks come over the crown of the road, they want to slide.

Both crews will continue to work into the evening.
