logo-Iowa-DNRThe first shotgun hunting season begins today in Iowa.

Greene County Conservation Director Dan Towers says between the two shotgun hunting seasons in the state, about 125,000 hunters are expected to be out. Of those hunters, about 60 percent participate in the first shotgun season.

Towers explains some of the safety reminders for hunters who will be out for the shotgun season.

“Blaze orange is really important. Not only is it a safety issue, it’s a legal requirement. You have to wear at least a vest and again, the more the better. Most hunting accidents over the years have been the shooter not being able to see the victim.”

Towers adds that if you purchased a deer tag with your hunting license, you can hunt either a doe or a buck.

The first shotgun season runs from today through Wednesday.
