Main Street Guthrie Center is continuing its public art project.

Director Julie Bailey says their project is to put a sculpture at the park by Dowd Drug. Highway 44 in Guthrie Center is part of the Western Skies Scenic Byway. Bailey says the Scenic Byway Foundation wants to put public art on each of the 15 scenic byways across the state. Guthrie Center was chosen as the community for the project on the Western Skies Byway.

A call for artists to present their sculpture ideas to a committee was made and of the six applicants, the committee narrowed it to two individuals. Bailey says once a winner is selected, they will hold a public meeting on November 10th.

“People can come in and they can meet that artist, they can talk to them about their artwork (and) they can give them their ideas. We want this sculpture to be reflective of Guthrie Center’s environment, and culture and community.”

Most of the funding for the $20,000 project has been awarded through grants from the Guthrie County Community Foundation for $10,000 and the Scenic Byway Foundation for $5,000.
