We are coming up on a holiday weekend, which means family get togethers and several parties will be held.

If you are going to be attending a party or hosting one, Hy-Vee Registered Dietitian Joselyn Evans has some tips on helping you make healthier food choices this weekend.

If you are going to cook for your family or are hosting a party, Evans suggests a healthier protein like fish, because it is lower in calories and contains Omega-3 acids, which the body needs. However, if you are worried about cooking a delicate fish, like tilapia, on the grill, Evans has a recommendation.

“Maybe putting it in like a foil packet. You can always put some veggies in there as well, which is kind of fun if you have some people coming over, you can have everyone their own little, mini-foil packet. Which can make for something different than your normal burgers, and brats and hotdogs.”

As for vegetable choices, Evans says zucchini and sweet bell peppers are low in calories and contain lots of antioxidants.

However, if you are going to a party where you don’t have control over the food choices, she suggests eating the foods that are there in moderation.

Evans will share more tips with us on Monday’s Let’s Talk Greene County program, which airs during the 9am, noon and 5pm hours or anytime on our website.
