illegal fireworksIowa lawmakers didn’t pass legislation this year to legalize fireworks in the state.

Because of that, Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse says the only legal fireworks, without a permit, are sparklers and novelty fireworks at convenience stores like snakes. He explains what may happen if they see someone lighting illegal fireworks.

“First of all, absolutely, we are going to seize your fireworks and take them from you and you could face a fine for having possession of illegal fireworks. I believe that fine is up a little over the $300 mark, so it’s a serious fine and there’s good reason for that, (which is) public safety.”

He adds that 24 percent of all fireworks injuries are under the age of 14, which he believes is one of the reasons why the legislature didn’t pass a fireworks legalization bill.

Clouse hopes everyone has a fun and safe holiday weekend.
