A heads up for Greene County residents…if you notice an animal-related odor by the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, that’s because there was a spill from a railcar that runs throughout the county.

Emergency Management Coordinator Dennis Morlan tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the Department of Natural Resources have confirmed an animal-fat spill called tallow, from a Union Pacific train that started in Missouri Valley and may have run to Cedar Rapids. The liquid is between the north tracks in Greene County and it not explosive in nature.

Morlan wanted to make everyone aware that the liquid has a strong odor to it and it may get worse over night as the liquid solidifies.
