Jefferson Police Captain Heath EnnsThe Jefferson Police Department has undergone some changes since the beginning of the year.

After the departure of former Police Chief Dave Morlan, who is now the City’s Public Works Director, the Mayor appointed Mark Clouse as the new Chief. Clouse was the captain and recently, that position was given to officer Heath Enns. He graduated from Storm Lake High School in 2007 and earned his police science degree from Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City in 2009. He was then hired as a patrol officer by former Jefferson Police Chief Dan Taylor.

He explains why he chose law enforcement for his career.

“When I graduated from high school there’s a couple of different career opportunities that I was looking at and law enforcement was one of them. After doing some visits with some colleges, I decided to give police science a shot and obviously I did and I fell in love with it the first week and here we are.”

He started as a patrol officer and was then promoted to sergeant around October of 2015 and the Jefferson City Council recently promoted him to captain at their June 14th meeting. He’s also served under three chiefs, which he says he’s grateful to have those experiences.

“I’ve had a lot of knowledge from all three of them, start off with Dan Taylor and Dave Morlan, now Mark Clouse. I have a lot of gratitude for all three of them. Chief (Mark) Clouse, about 95 percent of my career I have worked directly under (him) and I can’t thank him enough for training me and showing me the ropes and I couldn’t have asked for a better guy to look to and admire to be.”

He will officially take over as captain on July 1st.
