Greene County High School sophomore Rachael Danielson was medalist at Monday’s Class 4A Regional Girls’ Golf Tournament at the Carroll Country Club and she earned a trip to the May 31-June 1 State Tournament in Ames at the Coldwater Links Golf Course. Danielson shot 84 for 18 holes and becomes the first player in the four years of Greene County HS to qualify for a State Golf Tournament. Not only that, she is a rarity for the Jefferson-based girls’ golf program, which has existed for more than 50 years. Further research is needed, but it’s been at least 40 years, and perhaps longer, since a female from the Jefferson based program has played in a State Golf Tournament.

Coach Heath Telleen said of Danielson, “She played fantastic and could have shot much lower.” An example of that was a shot she made that would have been a hole-in-one, but the ball bounced into the cup, then bounced out.

The Greene County team was not among the leaders. Senior Katelyn Hagen shot 110, senior Nicole Rohner 115, and Kaitlyn McColley 128. Senior Alison Gallagher shot 137 and junior Emily Heupel shot 155.

The coach added , “I am very grateful to the three seniors. They really improved the last two years.”

Creston won the team title with 349 strokes. Spencer was second at 379 and both teams qualify for the State Tournament. Harlan was third at 384 with Lewis Central (Council Bluffs) at 415, Carroll 417, Denison-Schleswig 419, LeMars 428, Greene County 437, Storm Lake 446, and 478 for Glenwood.

The tournament was halted for two hours by a thunderstorm.
