got drugsPrescription drug abuse continues to be an issue across the nation.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, an estimated 52 million people have used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons at least once in their lifetimes.  A survey conducted by the NIDA found that 1 in 12 high school seniors have used the pain reliever Vicodin for nonmedical use and 1 in 20 reported using OxyContin.

In an effort to help combat this problem, the Perry Police Department is participating in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

This Saturday from 10am until 2pm, residents can turn in their unused or expired medications at the Perry Hy-Vee.  Everything from prescriptions to over the counter medications, pet medications, vitamins, supplements, ointments and creams can be dropped off, no questions asked. The items will then be picked up by Drug Enforcement Administration officers and incinerated.

The goal of the event is to provide a safe, convenient and responsible way for people to dispose of these items, while also educating the public about potential abuse.
