law enforcement centerThe Greene County Sheriff’s office is offering the opportunity for anyone to drop off old and expired prescription drugs this Saturday.

The Sheriff’s office is partnering up again with the Drug Enforcement Administration to collect anyone’s unused or expired prescription medications with no questions asked. Chief Deputy Jack Williams says prescription drugs are the leading cause of home burglaries. The Sheriff’s office participated last September in which Americans turned in over 702,000 pounds of prescription drugs at more than 5,000 sites operated by the DEA.

This will be the 11th time in the past six years that Greene County residents can take advantage of the program.

Not only do prescription drugs present a public safety issue, there are also public health issues as well. It is recommended to not flush prescription drugs down the toilet because it can kill the bacteria that it used to treat sewer water.

The National Drug Take Back Initiative will be this Saturday from 10am to 2pm at the law enforcement center in Jefferson.
