chip baltimoreAs we enter the second month of the Iowa Legislative session, lawmakers continue to discuss how to use the potential revenue for the coming fiscal year.

State Representative Chip Baltimore says one main component every year is how much to give in additional state supplemental aid. The total amount of anticipated additional revenue is $153 million, of which Baltimore says the House last week proposed two percent state supplemental aid, because he knows there are other factors to consider for the rest of the revenue.

“We’ve got to keep in mind that we’ve got tens of millions of dollars of additional funds that we need to spend on our Medicaid system, as well as several million dollars on paying increases for our state employees.”

The Senate rejected the House’s proposal and are wanting a four percent increase in state supplemental aid, which Baltimore believes would completely wipe out the additional $153 million in revenue.

He doesn’t know when the argument over state supplemental aid will end, but it is a main component to setting up the state’s budget for the next fiscal year.
