wild turkeyThe Greene County Gobblers help to provide youth activities as well as increase public hunting areas in the county and the state.

Treasurer Ferd Long says majority of their funds go toward land acquisition projects for public hunting. In 2014, $20,000 was used for a 160-acre project in the Rippey area, a 24-acre project with the McMahon Access and a 212-acre project for the North Raccoon Wildlife Management. Then in 2015, the local chapter contributed $10,000 to another timber project along the Raccoon River.

Some of their funds also go toward two local programs, “Save the Habitat, Save the Hunt” and a youth outdoor day.

“Every year we have one in September (and) we partner with the Duck Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Greene County Sheriff’s Corporation (and) the DNR. We put on a day out at Slininger Woods. It started six years ago. We started out with about 13 youth (and) this year we had 50 of them out there.”

Their annual banquet is tomorrow. It will be at Clover Hall on the fairgrounds in Jefferson. Doors open at 5:30pm with a meal to be served at 7pm. The live auction will follow the meal. Tickets are $45 or $55 for two and anyone 17 or younger is $10. Tickets will be available at the door.
