On Monday the ADM volleyball team learned it had received a first-round bye in the Class 4A regional playoffs, much to the surprise of many following the program.

Tigers head coach Mary Beth Scott shares that same level of surprise, and unlike in most years, she does not want the bye because of how ADM’s schedule lines up.

“No, I did not expect it at all. And  I kind of wish we hadn’t gotten a bye just because we have this off week, then we play two matches, then we play Carroll the following week — I would have liked to have played, and unfortunately I don’t get a say in it,” Scott said. “It is was it is, and it’ll be tough. Again, Lewis Central will be tough. We played Norwalk, they’re tough. But you never know if we can play well, if we can put it together those last two weeks, anything’s possible.”

As Scott aluded to, the Tigers (14-13, 4-1 RRC) have this entire week off before playing No. 14 Bondurant-Farrar on Tuesday and Dallas-Center Grimes next Thursday.

The other curious part of ADM’s postseason assignment is that despite having the bye, ADM will not host the second-round playoff game as is typical for teams that receive a bye. Based on the records of the teams on ADM’s side of the bracket, one would assume that bye would go to Lewis Central.

Instead, The Tigers will play the winner of No. 4 Lewis Central (23-3) and Glenwood (14-6) Oct. 29 at Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs.
