As previously reported, Greenfield artist Bubba Sorensen has been painting a large boulder in Adair County with different patriotic themes each year since 1998. He says since then he has painted smaller Freedom Rocks in numerous other counties, and his goal is to have one in every one of Iowa’s 99 counties. “I’m up to 28 across the State. I have one on each of Iowa’s borders, so you’re close to a rock as soon as you enter Iowa. Most of them are in the western part of the state but I do have one in LeClaire, on the east side of the state. So they are beginning to be sprinkled around right now. I hope to within the next six years have one in each of the 99 counties.”

While the other Freedom Rocks are painted with similar patriotic themes, the 12 foot tall, 60 ton flagship boulder in Adair County is the only one that receives a new paint job each year. We’ll wrap up our conversation with Sorensen today on Let’s Talk Guthrie County. It airs during the 9 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. hours on K107.9 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com
