Greene County SheriffA tragic accident claims the life of an eight year-old in Greene County on Wednesday afternoon.

Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert tells Raccoon Valley Radio, at 4:44pm Wednesday, three deputies and Greene County Emergency Medical Services responded to an all terrain vehicle rollover accident at 904 Emerald Avenue.

Haupert says eight year-old Grant Robbins of Scranton was driving a Polaris Ranger XP side-by-side ATV back home to get supplies to take back to the fields when a sharp turn proved to be deadly.

“He was alone driving the vehicle and he did turn into the driveway and upset the vehicle and was crushed by the ATV rollbar itself.  You know, it’s always tragic (when that happens).”

Haupert says the ATV rolled on to the driver’s side, trapping Robbins underneath it and causing fatal injuries to his head. The young boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Robbins wasn’t wearing a seatbelt or a helmet at the time of the accident.  Sheriff Haupert says both of which could have helped save his life.

“We would just like to stress that when driving ATV’s, we would almost demand that if you’re out on the roadway or in the ditches – and this was ag-related, so he’s going to and from a field – but to put that seatbelt on and some type of helmet and try to eliminate head injuries on ATV’s.”

Funeral services will be at 10:30am on Saturday at the Abundant Life Ministries in Jefferson.  A memorial fund has been established at Home State Bank.

Principal Scott Johnson says Robbins was a second grader at Greene County Elementary School and grief counselors are available to provide services for students.  He adds that the school’s thoughts and prayers are with the family.
