The Perry Police Department wants to alert people of a telephone scam that has recently started in town.

A caller will identify themselves as a representative with Alliant Energy or MidAmerican Energy and they tell you that you have an outstanding bill that you must pay otherwise your electricity will be shut off.  The caller will also ask for your credit card information.  The person will give you a 1-800 number to call with an extension.

Officials with the police department caution individuals to not give out their credit card information if you receive a call like this.  They suggest to call your energy provider and verify with them that you don’t have an outstanding bill.  Your energy provider will not make house calls asking for credit card information without your authorization.
