The Guthrie Center Police Department is currently a two man department consisting of Chief Rod Pavelka, and Officer Brandon Lenehan. It’s public knowledge that Lenehan is job hunting, and has already interviewed with two Sheriff’s Departments in a different region of Iowa. This leaves the department, as well as the City’s Council on the verge of being in the same situation they were in less than a year ago, when they hired Lenehan– being a one man department, while still needing to provide adequate police services to the nearly sixteen-hundred residents of Guthrie Center. The Guthrie Center City Council is at the moment considering a variety of fixes to that situation, which vary from expanding the department to a three-man force, to raising the base pay to keep newly hired officers to stay around longer, and perhaps the most extreme measure would be to let the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Department absorb law enforcement duties of the City of Guthrie Center; the price and stipulations of that service remain unknown to the City Council, but Mayor Denny Kunkle will appear in front of the Guthrie County Board of Supervisors Thursday Morning to address the situation in person.
