Greene County enters the break for the holidays with a boys’ basketball record of 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference after winning 77-75 Friday night in Jefferson vs. North Polk (Alleman). The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Rams, while the Comets have dropped three of their last four and fell to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The home game was the fourth in the last five games for the Rams while the Comets played on the road for the first time in five games.

Sophomore Trey Tucker scored 30 points vs. NP on 12 of 19 shooting from the floor and five of six foul shooting. He went one of three from three-p0int range, and in his last two games of December scored 70 points on 27 of 42 field goal, and 12 of 14 free throw shooting. He’s averaging 27 points one-third of the way through the schedule and is making more than 56 percent of his field goal attempts.

Seniors Landon Braun and Riah Nelsen added 16 and 12 points for the Rams. Greene Count made 27 of 49 shots overall including seven of 16 three-point tries. They were 16 of 26 from the foul line and turned the ball over 16 times. A 16-point second quarter lead turned into a one point deficit late in the third before the lead grew to 10 points in the fourth.

The Comets trailed 76-73 and fouled Tucker with 12.1 seconds left and no timeouts remaining. He made the front end of a one-and-one, before missing. The Comets scored with one second left to make it a two-point game, but time ran out.

NP was led by junior Brett Haun with 24 points and senior Blake Brauer with 14. Brauer fould out with 3:44 to play in the game. The Comets were seven of 21 on three-point shots, 29 of 63 overall, and nine of 18 from the free throw line.

Greene County is off for the holidays and plays next on Jan. 6 in Des Moines vs. Saydel.
