The December portion of the high school girls’ basketball schedule for Greene County ended on Friday night in Jefferson with a 58-49 loss to North Polk (Alleman) in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play. Coach Chad Morton’s team is 4-4 overall and 4-3 in the league while Clint Albertsen’s Comets improved to 4-5 overall and 4-3 in the HOIAC.

NP led 16-11 after one quarter and built the lead to 12 points before the Rams came back to take a 46-43 lead with 7;14 left in the last quarter. Leading scorer Kayla Mobley left with an apparent injury with 6:21 on the clock, and even though Mobley returned to the court with 3:05 remaining, Greene County went scoreless for a total of 5:14 of playing time. They were out scored 15-3 in the final 7:14 of the game.

The Comets went 20 of 50 from the floor and six of 18 on three pointers. They were 12 of 17 shooting free throws, and all three of those figures were above what NP entered the game at. They scored 18 points over their usual average. Sophomore Macy Gill had 18 points with 13 by Maddy Hill and 10 for Riley Murphy. Those two are also sophomores. The Comets had 16 turnovers.

The Rams had 15 points from Mobley, and nine each by Stacy Mears and Mariss Promes. All are seniors. Greene County went 20 of 38 from the floor and three of six from the foul line. Coach Morton’s team shot its first free throw with 2:04 left in the game, and they turned the ball over 28 times.

Greene County is off until a Jan. 6 trip to Des Moines to face Class 3A number 13 Saydel.
