Greene County SheriffSlick spots on a bridge is believed to have caused a single vehicle accident with injuries in Greene County on Saturday.

Sheriff Steve Haupert tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the Greene County Emergency Medical Services, Jefferson Fire Department and Greene County Deputies responded to a single vehicle accident at 9:57am by the Raccoon River Bridge west of Jefferson on US Highway 30.

He says 50 year-old Gina Rae Sloan of Urbandale was heading west in a 2003 Honda CRV when she drove over a slick spot on the bridge and struck the bridge and then continued into a ditch, striking a tree.  She was transported to the Greene County Medical Center by Greene County EMS with non-life threatening injuries.  Her current status is unknown at this time.  Her vehicle was a total loss.

Haupert reminds everyone that bridges can be more dangerous during the winter time to travel on.

“Generally because the pavement is more elevated there’s a greater chance for a quicker freeze.  Usually, that’s what the state does when they put their brine down, they usually concentrate on those bridges, knowing that those areas, those surfaces do get colder a lot faster.”

He would like everyone to be observant of the weather conditions and take appropriate action to keep yourself safe on the road.
