The Jennifer Dowd Memorial Toy Drive continues to make strides to carry on a local legacy.

12 years ago, Phyllis Bunkers started a toy drive in the memory of her daughter, who passed away from a rare blood disorder.  Bunkers says their daughter received treatment at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines and they were so touched by the kindness of the staff that they wanted to start a toy drive to give back to the hospital.

Accepted donations includes toys, games, books, gift cards and money.  All donations will be given to the children’s clinic at Blank.  However, Blank will not accept stuffed animals.  As a way to say “thank you”, Bunkers notes that they will give each person that donates a coupon for a free half-dozen of donuts at their business, Bunkers Dunkers in Jefferson.

Bunkers talks about the overwhelming support that they receive every year for the toy drive.

“It’s been an incredible journey, it keeps Jennifer’s spirit alive.  Blank was a big part of our lives for so long.  It’s a great tribute to them (Blank) and to her (Jennifer), all the things that she went through.”

She adds that last year, they led a sticks art project which is displayed at the clinic.  They are also nearing the $20,000 cumulative contribution to the hospital.

All donations must be dropped off at Bunkers Dunkers before December 15th so that everything can be delivered to the Des Moines hospital before Christmas.
