warren cultural centerThe Warren Cultural Center in Greenfield was one of several projects that received an award from the State Historical Society of Iowa during this year’s Preserve Iowa Summit that was held in Cedar Rapids.

Executive Director Ken Sidey says they were chosen for the Margaret Keyes award which ‘recognizes outstanding preservation of a large historic project’.

This isn’t the first time that the Warren Cultural Center has received an award in recognition of the restoration work that started in the 1990’s to restore their 1896 Opera House and mainly took off in 2010.

The Opera House was in bad shape and the second floor had been vacant for almost 50 years according to Sidey.

This is the fourth award at the state level for the Center. Sidey mentions the top award that was received, “The top honor that we’ve received was a National Preservation Honor Award from the National Trust for Historic Places. This was an award that we received at the end of last year. And we were one of about 10 projects from around the country to receive that. All of the other ones were from big cities.”
