Several people will be traveling today to and from their Labor Day festivities and with that comes increased traffic on the roads.

The Jefferson Police Department is continuing to participate, along with 250 other law enforcement agencies, in the Special Traffic Enforcement Program with the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau.

Sergeant Nick Sorensen says officers will be watching for drunk drivers, speeders and other violators during the busy holiday times of the year.  He adds that this month is one of the deadliest months of the year for traffic crashes.  Last year alone, Iowa had 317 fatal motor vehicle accidents.

Sorensen urges everyone to stay safe and be responsible on the road at all times, not just during sTEP programs.  The current sTEP Wave ends on September 7th.
