6605_594654083897720_843212160_n-150x150As we reported last week, the registration window is now open for the Guthrie County Hospital Fitness Center’s 7th Annual “Heat the Streets” 5k run and walk.

Fitness Coordinator Diane Duzenbury says her goal is have more than 100 entries into this year’s event, and for those planning to participate she has some advice: don’t take for granted the 5k distance.

“You can really injure your knees or any part of your body actually by trying to run a 5k just cold.  I would actually, if they haven’t done it all, start with walking.  Then add in some short distance running within those walks to kind of build yourself up to do the 3.2 miles.”  (Quote 1)

Duzenbury says training for the run in Guthrie Center is also important because it is hillier than most courses, which can additional stress to knees and other leg muscles.

For those considering whether or not to run in “Heat the Streets,” Duzenbury tries to sway them toward saying yes.

“It is run through our Foundation which is the fundraising part of our hospital and we have our own little pot from that.  (The Fitness Center) uses (proceeds) to help people out that have been told by a doctor they need some therapy but maybe don’t have insurance and can’t afford it.  They can come here and we can maybe help them out for a month or two to get them going.” (Quote 2)

Early registration into “Heat the Streets” costs just $15 until September 3rd.  The actual event will be held Saturday, September 20th.
