Greene County RamsThe student construction class at Greene County High School may take on a different mission this school year.

For several years, high school students that enroll in the construction class build a house for a potential buyer every school year.  For the last two years, the house on East Wilcox Way has yet to be completed.

Superintendent Tim Christensen says the class fell behind at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year getting the foundation poured in November and it is still waiting to have cabinets and final electricity installed.

At last week’s school board meeting, the Board gave Christensen permission to hire contractors to finish the work on the current house this summer so they can put it on the market before fall.  Low student enrollment has been a factor in some of the delay.

Instructor Chuck Wenthold said ten students is the minimum to get a house completed and going into this school year, only five juniors and seniors are signed up for the class.

Christensen talks about what will happen with the class this year.

“Due to the fact that we don’t have the house sold and the program has not gone as well as we’d like it the last two years, we are looking at continuing the program next year but kind of in a modified fashion.  Not looking at building a complete house.”

Some of those projects would be smaller in scale but still fulfill the requirements of the class.

Christensen notes that they would like to build another house but start in the summer of 2015 then way when the weather turns bad during the school year, the students worked during the summer to make up those hours.

The current house will be put on the market ranging from $150,000-$185,000.
