The most successful season in the history of high school softball in Greene County ended on Friday with a third place finish in Class 3A for the Greene County Rams. Coach Tom Kennedy’s team qualified for a state tournament for the first time for a Jefferson-based program and the Rams closed out a 29-8 season with a 10-3 victory over second rated East Marshall (Le Grand) on Friday afternoon north of Ft. Dodge at Rogers Sports Complex. The victory put the finishing touches on a run never before seen from a high school softball program in Greene County. The Rams played six postseason games, all on the road and all against opponents ranked eleventh or higher. They went 5-1 in the postseason with the only loss taking place by a 4-1 score in the semifinals to eventual state champion Clarke (Osceola).

Greene County took control of the third place game early by scoring five runs in the top of the second inning vs. East Marshall. A single run in the fourth and four more in the sixth accounted for the Rams’ runs. The Mustangs scored all of its runs on a fifth inning homer from Taylor Fricke. The Rams had a three-run home run from Tressa Rasmussen, her first this season, and a solo shot from Emily Christensen, her third. Rasmussen also singled, as did Christensen. Marissa Promes singled twice and drove in a run, while Kayla Mobley had a base hit and two runs batted in. Hannah Onken doubled, singled, and had one RBI, with two singles by Carleigh Paup and a base hit from Sydney Koch.

Losing pitcher Mariah Fritz allowed 12 hits and eight walks. Promes improved to 25-5 on the season with the win and she allowed eight hits, one walk, and she recorded seven strikeouts. Promes was named to the 3A All-Tournament team.

None of the 10 Greene County starters are seniors. Seven starters are juniors and three are sophomores.
