The Adair County Board of Health has passed rules regarding the hazardous gas radon as it pertains to new home construction, major home remodeling and small business building construction.

According to Adair & Guthrie County Sanitarian Stephen Patterson, the Adair County Board of Health has elected to install this radon protection system in new construction because it is very low in cost–usually less than $500.

If a home is tested though and high radon levels are present, Patterson says retrofitting to remove the radon can cost between $1,500 and $3,000.  Many home sales now specify radon testing as part of the sale.

An informational meeting will be held next Friday, April 25th, at 10am inside the Warren Cultural Center in Greenfield to go over the new radon rules and regulations.  Patterson says the presentation is primarily for contractors and plumbers but the public is also welcome to attend and ask questions.

Patterson says these new radon rules now in place in Adair County were enacted in Guthrie County in 2007.  They were also put in place in Cass County earlier this year.
