Greene County SheriffWhat started as a controlled burn ended up causing severe damage in Greene County on Friday.

Sheriff Steve Haupert says Doyle Haglund called in a controlled burn to the Law Enforcement Center until a trash burn caught some dry grass on fire and it spread to some abandoned out buildings and an old barn at 2375 260th Street in Rippey at 1:53pm.  He comments that nothing of value was in any of the destroyed buildings.

He states that the Jefferson, Ogden and Perry fire departments along with the Grand Junction Fire and Rescue Unit battled the blaze for two hours and prevented any other property or farm acreage damage from the fire.

Haupert notes that no one was injured in the incident and he adds that due to the recent rainfall and precipitation that he believes the county won’t need to start spring under a burn ban.

However, he reminds everyone to call in anytime you plan on doing a controlled burn so that they are aware and so that you can avoid facing possible citations.
