West Central Valley WildcatWith Veteran’s Day coming up next Monday, West Central Valley High School has been doing a little extra this year to thank those who have served our nation’s troops.

Initiated by social studies instructor Ben Adkins, the school has been participating in its second annual Disabled American Veteran’s clothing and used items drive for the past week, and he will continue accepting items until this Friday.

Adkins says items collected by students will be donated to the D.A.V. thrift store in Des Moines, and he explains the reasoning behind having such a drive.

“Year after year we’ve had a Veteran’s Day Assembly, but we really didn’t do anything that was active, so something where we were actually contributing back to veterans is one of the main (reasons) why I did it.”

Adkins says his students have really gotten behind this year’s effort, and many seem to be truly proud to be contributing to the bettering of somebody else’s life.  Adkins says anyone in the local area who would like to contribute clothing or a used item, feel free to bring it on in.

“This week is when we’re really focusing on getting the drive going.  I’ve got a pile started in the back of my classroom of stuff that people have brought in, but (we) definitely could use more.  I’d like to fill up this classroom with stuff, and then the D.A.V. is going to send out a truck and we’ll send it off to the east side of Des Moines to help people.”

Anyone interested in contributing to West Central Valley’s clothing drive can do so by contacting the high school at 515-523-1313.
