Raccoon Valley Radio’s own Shawn Kenney will be honored at the state boys basketball tournament next week for a media award.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released its annual awards list and Kenney will be among four other honorees in sports journalism and broadcasting.

The Council Bluffs native earned his bachelor’s degree in broadcasting from the University of Iowa in 1998.  Since then, Kenney has been the sports director and worked in sales at KDLS.  He has broadcasted over 1,400 high school events for the Perry Bluejays and area schools.  In 2009, Kenney took his talents to the next level and started working in television, doing play-by-play for ESPN 3 and ESPNU.

Kenney says he was humbled when he found out that he would be receiving the award from IHSAA and he dedicates the award to all the kids that he’s had the pleasure to cover over the years.

“I always try to make a delivery that puts the kids first.  I’m just simply the storyteller if you will.  For me from day one, its always been about putting the kids first.”

The media awards presentation will be made during the halftime of the class 2A boys state basketball championship game on Friday, March 8th at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
